World Series 1912 - Authentic Fan Chatter
"Well old sport what do you think of the Red Sox"
That's the first sentence in this postcard message sent from Boston on Oct. 18, 1912. The 1912 World Series had just concluded when this fan sent a postcard to a friend in New Hampshire. His comments take us back to the action, 105 years ago! The stats about this world series reveal that the second game didn't count because it ended in a tie when the game was called due to darkness - no electric lights at ball parks in 1912. In game 8, The Boston Red Sox beat the New York Giants to become world champs. The postcard writer goes on to say "It wasn't by errors they won it because Boston made twice as many. Why Boston was only playing with them." That was an accurate observation - Boston had 4 errors and New York had 2. The writer also mentions two Red Sox pitchers - Joe Wood and Hugh Bedient. Smoky Joe Wood was a Red Sox superstar from 1908-1915. I would love to know if this fan from Boston was able to attend the games and if not, how he followed the action. There was no radio broadcast in 1912. The daily newspaper, telegraph, face-to-face conversation, and postcards/letters were the communication tools of the day!
