#30 Postcard Trivia 9.18.18

Postcard from the collection of J Garner. Hall County Court House, Grand Island, Nebraska. 1915.

Is Grand Island a tropical getaway in the Caribbean, or is it a city in the middle of America’s heartland? Maybe both. This postcard features the impressive Hall County Court House that was built in 1904, in the city of Grand Island, Nebraska. The area was settled in 1857 by German settlers on an island formed by the Wood and Platte Rivers. The town was developed more inland by the Union Pacific Railroad a decade later. The prosperity brought by the railroad had a down side - the hardwood trees on the island were cut down to make railroad ties. The court house is on the National Register of Historic Places and features a domed rotunda with a skylight. It continues to be the official building for government services in Hall County, Nebraska.
