#36 Postcard Trivia 11.6.18
This postcard is a special reminder of the sacrifices made by Americans during the first world war. As we honor all veterans on Veterans Day, November 11, 2018, it is hard to believe it has been 100 years since our troops served bravely in Europe in World War I. The soldier who wrote this message was serving in Germany at the end of the war. He was serving in the A.E.F. - American Expeditionary Forces, a part of the US Army commanded by General John Pershing. His message sounds hopeful that he would be able to return home soon - “that is the talk now that all of the drafted men will bee (be) in the states in six weeks.” He speaks of the hardship of serving overseas for an extended period of time. “…it will run a man crazy if he stais (stays) over here for three or fore (four) years.” I imagine his mother was thrilled to hear from him and receive the good news of the upcoming discharge. The 1919 Easter postcard he used for the message was provided by the Knights of Columbus. This famous Catholic organization manned “clubhouses” in Europe to support US troops. The KofC provided entertainment, recreation, writing materials, and encouragement to millions of soldiers. This soldier no doubt appreciated the support and an opportunity to send a message to his mother. I am thankful for the veterans in my family who have proudly served our country as well as all veterans who are willing to sacrifice so much for the greater good.
