#37 Postcard Trivia 11.13.18

Ever had a day like this? In 2018, this level of frustration seems to come in the form of traffic jams and technology! The artwork on this postcard is an oil on canvas painting entitled Utica (A Quiet Day in Utica), 1907, by famed western artist, Charles M. Russell. I bought the postcard at the Sid Richardson Collection of Western Art in Fort Worth where I had the opportunity to view the artwork in person. It is a beautiful piece of work and I found it easy to identify with the challenge this cowboy is facing - sometimes nothing seems to go right! The details of the town in the background depict actual people and places in Utica, Montana that were well known by the artist. It is an authentic view of the Old West. Sid Richardson was a successful oilman, rancher, and philanthropist in Texas and Oklahoma. From 1942, until his death in 1959, he collected artwork by Frederic Remington and Charles Russell. The museum, located in Sundance Square in Fort Worth, houses his collection and provides a wonderful place for us to admire the amazing talent of these two artists and get a real feel for life in the Old West. My souvenir postcard makes me ready to go back and see the “real thing” again!
