It looks like a postcard…but it’s not. This is a small card from the 1870’s that was hand delivered or mailed in an envelope. At that time, postcards had not gained popularity. (That didn’t happen until 1898, when an Act of Congress allowed privately printed postcards to be mailed at the same rate as those printed by the government.) This little card was sent out by the Farm Journal to its subscribers. The Farm Journal Magazine is an agricultural publication for farm families and is still in production today. It was first published from its home office in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in March, 1877. It was intended to serve all the farmers within a day’s ride of Philadelphia. Answer to Trivia Question:

A. 1870 - just a few years before the Farm Journal sent out its holiday greeting card to subscribers. In 1938, the law was amended to make Christmas Day a paid holiday for federal workers.
