#41 Postcard Trivia 1.8.19

Published by National Collegiate Marketing, Austin, Texas,1968. From the collection of J Garner.

This over-sized, vintage postcard provides an entertaining look at the eight collegiate teams that made up the NCAA Southwest Conference in 1968. (University of Houston joined in 1972.) The Southwest Conference was a powerhouse for most of its 82-year history (1914 - 1996) and I enjoyed being a big fan for the last half. This is one of my favorite postcards. The holes in the upper corners are authentic - thumbtacks held it to the big bulletin board in my room. I grew up in College Station, Texas, a university town and home of the Texas A & M Aggies (see Ol’ Sarge in the photo above!). I have great memories of attending many Southwest Conference sports events as a child. As a college student, I moved down the road to attend Baylor University in Waco, Texas, but remained in the Southwest Conference. As student sports fans in the Southwest Conference, we were fortunate. Because most of the schools were located somewhere along the I-35/I-45 corridor, we enjoyed fun road trips supporting our team at out-of-town games. In case you are not familiar with the great universities of the SWC, here is the roster: top row, 1 to r, Baylor University (Bears), Texas Tech University (Red Raiders), University of Texas (Longhorns), Texas A & M University (Aggies), Southern Methodist University (Mustangs). On the bench, l to r, Rice University (Owls), Texas Christian University (Horned Frogs), University of Arkansas (Razorbacks).
